Split answer: the monthly brush-and-bulky week takes stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters — but never anything containing coolant, gas or chemicals: no refrigerators, no freezers, no air conditioners, no dehumidifiers. So half your kitchen qualifies for the free week (if you can wait for it and carry it to the curb) and the other half needs a private route with EPA refrigerant handling.

Most do at delivery, free or for a modest fee — the best-timed option when you're replacing like-for-like. It fails when the old unit must go before the new arrives, when you bought online with no delivery crew, or when nothing is replacing it (the garage beer fridge, the dead chest freezer).
Metal-rich units left visibly at the curb often vanish free — washers and dryers especially. The catches: it's outside the city's set-out rules between bulk weeks (billable if reported), fridges may get stripped for the compressor and abandoned, and 'usually vanishes' isn't a plan when a landlord walkthrough or delivery crew is on the calendar.
Basic disconnection yes — water lines capped, dryer flex lines detached, gas valves shut. Hard-piped (soldered) or gas-line work beyond the shutoff needs a plumber first; we're happy to work right behind one.
