Why "starting at" never matches the receipt
- The anchor is the smallest theoretical job. "$74" prices one bag at the curb. Your actual couch, on your actual stairs, is quoted later — by someone standing in your driveway.
- Volume estimates flex. "About a quarter truck" is a judgment call made by the person who profits from rounding up. Per-item flat prices don't have a judgment call in them.
- The door is where fees live. Stair fees, heavy fees, same-day fees, fuel surcharges — the estimate model reveals them after you're committed. In a published-price model, the stairs and the COI are already in the number.
- Declining is designed to be awkward. Once the truck came out, "no thanks" costs you the appointment and them nothing. A photo quote costs nobody anything to refuse — which is exactly why it stays honest.
The two honest caveats
